Westward Hopewells - Monday, August 4 - The Pacific Ocean and Grace's 1 yr Gotcha Day

We checked out of the KOA and made our way up Hwy 101 towards Crescent City, CA.  There were still some smokey spots.

The drive was beautiful and it wasn’t long before the kids were begging to go to the beach.  We finally stopped at Clam Beach for about an hour.

Emily didn’t mind the sand too much, but Grace was NOT a fan right from the get-go.

Once we made it through the soft sand to the wetter and more stable sand I thought she would calm down but then they both freaked.

Josh, of course, wanted them to at least get their feet wet.

The second Emily saw the waves coming toward her she tried to book it.

The other kids were totally cool about it.

The little girls never did warm up to it.  They would just lift their feet up to make sure the water didn’t touch them.

As Pops would say, “Sorry, girls.  It’s mandatory fun!"

I finally told Josh to go enjoy it with the bigs for a little bit.  I stood off to the side a little bit and the girls clung to my legs screaming and crying incessantly.  We were far enough back that the waves couldn’t get us but it was still torture for them.

And then Sawyer got knocked down by a wave.

It’s a good thing Maddie was standing right by him because Daddy was farther off just laughing his head off at the whole situation and not being very helpful.

He shook it off pretty quickly though and was back to running around in no time.

The kids and Daddy started playing ‘who can go the deepest into the ocean?’  Guess who won?  It was very cold and windy!

Josh finally came back and took the camera from me so we could prove I was there too.  ;)

I tried to distract the girls by helping them find some cool stuff.  Emily would pick things up and show them to me but it was almost like she did it because she thought she had to.  She wasn’t happy about it either.

Maddie found lots of good stuff.

We stayed for about an hour and then headed back to the car.  We got everyone cleaned up and got the girls calmed down then got back on the road.

The sun was starting to set and it was absolutely beautiful!

We made our way to Crescent City and found a Walmart to load up on groceries.  We ended up eating dinner at the Subway in the Walmart at about 10pm.  Which was very fitting since exactly one year ago on this day we met little Gracie in China (where we ate Subway for lunch and dinner several times!) Josh and I did lots of reminiscing on the road that day about our little Gracie and what a crazy year it had been! We made it to the KOA pretty late that night but we’re really getting the hang of setting up the RV pretty quickly.
