Shortly after we moved out here we decided we'd get some chickens. It's totally against the HOA so it may not last very long. We do live next door to the HOA President and he's fully aware that we have chickens. He doesn't really care though and as long as no one else complains we should be good.
Josh found a guy out in Quinlan (not too far from here) that builds these coops so he ordered one. After we got back from Wyoming he called to say it was ready. We went on a little excursion out to his house to pick it up. He also had chicks for sale and the kids fell in love immediately and begged to get one. We had planned on getting older chickens so we would know for sure that they were hens (definitely no roosters until we want to alert the whole neighborhood to our law-breaking!) But the kids know who to go to to ask for these sorts of things - Mr. Softy. He gave me the look - "Can't the precious little children have the sweet little baby chicks?" and what else could I say but OK? So we came home with a coop and four little chickies of unknown gender.
They are dang cute though. Heaven help us if one or more turns out to be a rooster!
We got the coop all set up in the backyard and the kids have been out there everyday playing with their little chicks. (We used a frisbee as their water dish for the first couple of days. Since we weren't planning on bringing chicks home with us we were a little unprepared! They now have a proper water dish and feeder.)
Ryley picked a little black one and named it Earthquake because she was shaking when Ryley first held her.
Cash chose this little yellow one and named it Marshmallow the Brute, because that is just a Cash thing to do. Who knows?!
Maddie also chose a little black one and named it Flappy.
Daddy chose one for Sawyer and when asked what he wanted to name it he answered, "Pink!" His is the reddish one and the biggest of the bunch.

They do make some noise but it just sounds like birds chirping at this point.
They've already grown so much from these pictures!
Anyone want to watch some chickens while we go to China for three weeks? :)
